The Legend of Rock, Paper Scissors, by Drew Daywalt
When the 7-year-old pulled ‘The Legend of Rock, Paper Scissors‘ out of the library basket his reaction was: “ooaarrrwww, this book is awesome” He had read it at the library before, but, for some reason, it never went into the library bag to get borrowed. He has since read it quite a few times and even let me read it to him.
I have to agree with his astute analysis, this book is awesome. It’s been a long time since I laughed out loud while reading a picture book. The illustrations are interesting and deal really well with what I can only assume is a difficult thing to do; giving emotions and personality to objects that are normally completely inanimate.
Though to be honest it’s the one-liners that really had me entertained. Especially when reading it aloud. It was lots of fun to use different voices to amp up the battle scenes. For example, Rock, to one of his unworthy opponents: “You, Sir, look like a fuzzy little bum”. Kids love it when adults have to read aloud things they normally wouldn’t. (BJ Novak wrote a whole book based on this notion: ‘The Book With No Pictures‘)
If you get a chance to borrow or gift ‘The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors’ rest assured it will be a winner.
Also, I believe Drew Daywalt makes a little cameo in ‘The Empire of Mum’s Study’.
